We count 124 groups working for intersex justice.*

Saifa, holding a megaphone, crouches over two intersex kids at a protest. All are wearing End Intersex Surgery t-shirts and smiling. The kids hold a sign saying 'Intersex Babies Have Rights' painted with hearts.

When the 1990s first brought internet access to a wider public, people born with unique genitalia, hormones, and other sex anatomy jumped at the chance to connect. We needed to talk about how our governments and healthcare systems forced us to change our bodies.

Three decades later, intersex groups around the world are driving challenges to legal and medical systems that police human difference. We collect them here.

Groups that work with multiple communities are considered "umbrella groups" and are marked with the ☂️ emoji. These groups may do a lot of intersex-specific work, or they may not. They may be places to ask about intersex organizing efforts in a country or region.

More About the Index

Why count intersex organizations?

Although international queer, trans, and disability justice movements have broadly supported or absorbed intersex conversations, we find that our issues tend to remain overlooked. Many defenses of healthcare access fall into liberal frames of identity, rights, and deferrence to state and medical power. Intersex movements expand these ideas.

Intersex organizations—especially those from the Global South—bring deep wisdom to fighting against anti-gender and pro-police policies. These brilliant groups win back power, moving both cultural attitudes and healthcare policy toward honoring bodily autonomy, often with very few resources. Keeping track of their efforts supports connection, attention from funders, and discussion on field growth over time.

Where does the data come from?

The information on this page comes from SLIM's secondary research. This builds on other efforts to collect data about the growth of the global intersex movement including Dr. Michela Balocchi's intersex map, The Trans Intersex History Africa archive, Intersex Asia's regional tracking, OII Europe's membership list, Astraea Intersex Human Rights Fund's grantee lists, ILGA's members list, and The State of Intersex Organizing report by Global Philanthropy Project and GATE.

What counts as an "intersex group?"

This is tricky. For example, what if a group's purpose is to support people born with variations in sex traits, but that group only uses medical language and rejects alignment with "intersex" movements? Many parents' or patient support groups work this way. What if an LGBTQIA group includes the "I" in their name—does that mean they have intersex-specific programs or knowledge? Not always. For a group to appear in this index, it must:

  • Resource intersex people through advocacy, policy, research, peer support, the arts, mutual aid, or direct services,
  • Use the word "intersex," even if it also accepts other terms,
  • Show it is working toward intersex justice values,
  • Be led by intersex people, or
    • Offer a dedicated intersex program led by intersex people within a larger organization, or
    • Explain how and why they include the "I," e.g. when a sexual minority or human rights group works with multiple communities

What counts as an "active" group?

We only show groups believed to be "active" on this page. A group is "active" if it has new activity on any of its linked pages within 3 years. Each group's listing page displays when its information was last updated.

How do you sort the groups by region?

Mirroring The State of Intersex Organizing reports, we use the the United Nations Geoscheme as a way to understand countries by region.
