Intersex activists and Columbia medical students protest New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Dix Poppas

After two years of planning and organizing, Columbia medical students coordinated a community-led protest at New York-Presbyterian, inspired by an Instagram Live conversation between Ericka Hart and Sean Saifa Wall.

Several years earlier in July 2020, Sam Kokoska pulled together other medical students who were interested in ending harmful medical interventions on intersex children at New York-Presbyterian. Their group, Columbia Students for Intersex Justice, organized film screenings, panels, changed curricula, and eventually protested their hospital in November 2022. The action was supported by intersex activists, community members, and organizations such as Voices4, a queer liberation collective.
