Hermaphrodites Speak! films intersex adults discussing their bodies with each other at first known American intersex retreat

Most intersex people had never met another in person. The Intersex Society of North America hosted an intimate retreat, hoping to break this isolation. They selected a Northern California retreat center for its quiet setting and the farm animals kept on-site. During the retreat, several ISNA members recorded a candid conversation about their bodies and their anger over what was taken from them.

Artist Carta Monir posted the recording to YouTube.

Imagine growing up knowing you were different, not quite knowing why and feeling like you were the only person in the world like you. Meet Angela, David, Heidi, Tom, Mani, Cheryl, Max and Hida as they tell their stories of growing up intersexed. Share their joy at finally meeting other people who are intersexed. Be amazed as you witness intersex people speaking out for the first time in their lives! —ISNA.org's description of the recording

I know, from my experience of my very own body… the really wonderful sensitivity that I had before surgery, in terms of genital sensation, and the tremendous orgasms that I had before… so it’s very painful for me to conceptualize that what’s been taken is a very specific eroticism… It means that I do in fact have a less than reliable sexual response, but most importantly it means that that very special form of sexuality and arousal, with all of that that was uniquely hermaphroditic, was taken, and that’s the crime. — Angela Moreno, quote transcribed by Intersex Campaign for Equality
